The Effect of the Harmonic Content Generated by AC/DC Modular Multilevel Converters on HVDC Cable Systems

2019

With the increasing penetration of renewable and decentralized energy sources into the power grid, an extended use of DC voltages is expected on both distribution and transmission levels. Generation of DC voltages by means of voltage source converters is associated with a wide spectrum of harmonic distortions at converter terminals, both on the ac and on the dc sides. This can lead to partial discharges in power cables, which deteriorate insulation material thus weakening its performance and reducing cable life-time. In the previously published paper, the effect of harmonic distortion on appearance of partial discharges in cable insulation was evaluated. Here, the study related to the PD be…

Model Predictive Control for Shunt Active Filters With Fixed Switching Frequency

2016

This paper presents a modification to the classical Model Predictive Control algorithm, named Modulated Model Predictive Control, and its application to active power filters. The proposed control is able to retain all the advantages of a Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control whilst improving the generated waveforms harmonic spectrum. In fact a modulation algorithm, based on the cost function ratio for different output vectors, is inherently included in the MPC. The cost function-based modulator is introduced and its effectiveness on reducing the current ripple is demonstrated. The presented solution provides an effective and straightforward single loop controller, maintaining an excel…

Prismatic lenses shift time perception

2009

Previous studies have demonstrated the involvement of spatial codes in the representation of time and numbers. We took advantage of a well-known spatial modulation (prismatic adaptation) to test the hypothesis that the representation of time is spatially oriented from left to right, with smaller time intervals being represented to the left of larger time intervals. Healthy subjects performed a time-reproduction task and a time-bisection task, before and after leftward and rightward prismatic adaptation. Results showed that prismatic adaptation inducing a rightward orientation of spatial attention produced an overestimation of time intervals, whereas prismatic adaptation inducing a leftward…

The impact of rear-view mirror distance and curvature on judgements relevant to road safety

2011

We report two experiments that investigate the impact of rear-view mirror distance and curvature on distance, spacing, and time-to-contact (TTC) judgements. The variation in mirror distance had a significant effect on TTC judgements, but only marginally influenced distance and spacing estimations. As mirror distance increased, TTC was overestimated, which is potentially dangerous. Control conditions with identical visual angles across different mirror distances revealed that effects were not solely caused by variation in visual angle. The impact of mirror curvature moderated the effect. While observers were unable to compensate for the mirror distance effect, they could do so for the distor…

Convex rear view mirrors compromise distance and time-to-contact judgements

2007

Convex rear view mirrors increasingly replace planar mirrors in automobiles. While increasing the field of view, convex mirrors are also taken to increase distance estimates and thereby reduce safety margins. However, this study failed to replicate systematic distance estimation errors in a real world setting. Whereas distance estimates were accurate on average, convex mirrors lead to significantly more variance in distance and spacing estimations. A second experiment explored the effect of mirrors on time-to-contact estimations, which had not been previously researched. Potential effects of display size were separated from effects caused by distortion in convex mirrors. Time-to-contact est…

Subjective Satisfaction in Long-term Orthokeratology Patients

2013

Purpose: To AU3 evaluate the subjective satisfaction in visual stability, night vision complains, and light distortion phenomena, and also the number of hours and days per week of lens wear, in patients with myopia undergoing orthokeratology (OK) treatment for at least 1 year. Methods: A visual analog scale (VAS) questionnaire containing 18 items was administered to 44 patients, 29 women and 15 men (mean age, 24.39 6 9.11 years), with a baseline spherical equivalent refractive error of 22.40 6 0.94 diopters and astigmatism up to 20.5 diopters. Average treatment period by the time of data collection was 19 6 7 months. Patients rated their satisfaction with the correction, with complaints of …

Light distortion of soft multifocal contact lenses with different pupil size and shape

2020

Purpose: To study the light distortion effects of soft multifocal contact lenses and the influence of different pupil size and shape. Methods: A total of 14 eyes of 7 healthy contact lens users (mean age 28.6 +/- 8.5 years) were recruited. The "Light Disturbance Analyser" device was employed for light characterization. The selected lenses were the monthly disposable "Biofinity multifocal" (CooperVision, CA, USA), both centre-distance and centre-near designs (addition power + 2.50 D). Two circular pupils of 3 mm and 5 mm of diameter, and an elliptical shape (3 horizontal and 5 vertical mm) were used. Metrics such as the light distortion index (LDI), best-fit circle radius and its irregularity…

Feeling of control of an action after supra and subliminal haptic distortions

2015

Here we question the mechanisms underlying the emergence of the feeling of control that can be modulated even when the feeling of being the author of one’s own action is intact. With a haptic robot, participants made series of vertical pointing actions on a virtual surface, which was sometimes postponed by a small temporal delay (15 or 65 ms). Subjects then evaluated their subjective feeling of control. Results showed that after temporal distortions, the hand-trajectories were adapted effectively but that the feeling of control decreased significantly. This was observed even in the case of subliminal distortions for which subjects did not consciously detect the presence of a distortion. Our…

Optokinetic stimulation affects temporal estimation in healthy humans

2007

The representation of time and space are closely linked in the cognitive system. Optokinetic stimulation modulates spatial attention in healthy subjects and patients with spatial neglect. In order to evaluate whether optokinetic stimulation could influence time perception, a group of healthy subjects performed "time-comparison" tasks of sub- and supra-second intervals before and after leftward or rightward optokinetic stimulation. Subjective time perception was biased by the direction of optokinetic stimulation. Rightward optokinetic stimulation induced an overestimation of time perception compared with baseline and leftward optokinetic stimulation. These results indicate a directional bias…

Algebraic real-time algorithm for B-Spline sinusoidal pulse width modulation in three phase voltage source inverters.

2008

In this paper a novel algebraic real-time algorithm for implementation of sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) based on B-spline carriers is introduced and discussed. B-spline functions are used as carrier signals with the aim to to reduce harmonic content of the three phase inverter output voltage. This algorithm eliminates the problem of B-spline recursive evaluation with convolution integrals or convolution sums in digital counterpart. The pulse pattern synthesis is made with the help pre-calculated duty cycle expressions. In this way the carrier signals have not to be really synthesized, hence the hardware and the whole inverter control system becomes cheaper, more reliable and affo…
